Reiki works on the principle of holistic wellbeing through the balancing of one's life force or life energy. Reiki is a Japanese form of therapy involving the transfer of energy through the Reiki Practitioner to the client. It relies on the body's natural ability to heal itself through the process of balancing energy.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural, holistic, hands-on, or hands-off healing system that does not use any aids, equipment or medicines. It only functions via the transfer of energy and can have no side effects unlike allopathic treatments.

Reiki pronounced as 'ray-key' is derived from the Japanese words 'rei' meaning transcendental spirit or free flowing and 'ki' meaning the vital life force or energy. It thus means free flowing energy. Reiki uses specific techniques for balancing the natural energy within the body. It touches the body on all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Reiki believes that an individual suffers from illness when the body's vital energy becomes unbalanced. Thus, Reiki practitioners heal by channelling energy in a particular pattern. In spiritual healing that also uses energy to heal, the practitioner releases energy into the client's body to effect healing. In Reiki however, the practitioner acts as a conduit for the Reiki energy.

While many people label Reiki as a 'new-age' alternative healing method, it is in fact one of the oldest systems of healing.

History Of Reiki

Reiki is believed to have originated in Tibet many thousands of years ago. Oriental seers developed many signs and symbols for healing from this system, which crossed cultures and evolved in many different healing systems. However, the original system of healing was lost.

It was in the mid 1800s that Dr. Mikao Usui revived Reiki. He carried out an extensive 21 year long study that involved learning about history's great spiritual leaders, the study of ancient Buddhist teachings and ancient sounds and symbols linked to the human body and nervous system. He also learned the technique to use the life force energy to heal.

Subsequently, Usui underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use the ancient system of healing. It was he who gave it the name 'Reiki'. He taught this system of healing throughout Japan until his death in 1893. Other proponents of Reiki like Dr. Hyashi, Hawayo Takata and Furumoto then took forward his legacy.

The Western world has only recently discovered Reiki in the mid 1970s. However, it has spread rapidly due to the fact that all it requires is someone willing attuned to Reiki to share the Reiki energy.

Characteristics Of Reiki Energy

There are certain characteristics of Reiki energy that make Reiki such a powerful system of healing. The life force that is the base of Reiki differs from energies used in spiritual healing and other alternative therapy methods.

Reiki energy is said to be self-motivating. It guides itself to the areas that require healing even though the practitioner and the patient may overlook some damaged parts.

Reiki energy is bipolar in nature. It is made up of both male and female healing energies. The male part comes from the Crown and other higher Chakras while the female part comes from the lower Root Chakras. The two energies communicate and decide how much of each polarity is needed so that the healing energies are balanced.

Reiki can never cause harm. It always knows what the patient needs and adjusts itself to create appropriate healing.

It is not the practitioner who is doing the healing or 'giving' healing. The practitioner is only the means through which the energy is flowing into the client. Hence the practitioner's personality cannot change the nature of the Reiki energy.

A Reiki practitioner can never run out of Reiki energy. Reiki is channelled healing and hence the practitioner's life force is constantly replenished from the universal life force all around us.

Reiki always increases energy and leaves one with a sense of wellbeing.

How Does Reiki Heal?

Reiki works at all levels - the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual. Reiki believes that we are alive because of the energy or life force flowing through us. This life force flows through the human body through chakras. The aura that we so often speak of is a manifestation of the life force. It is this life force that keeps the entire body functioning properly. If the life force is disrupted it causes a feeling of ill health and dis-ease.

Reiki is a system of healing that attempts to balance the life force. It flows through the body and charges the life force with positive energy and raises the vibration level of the energy field in and around the body. Reiki in essence rids the body of negative energy that causes the disruption of the flow of life force. It infuses the body with positive vibrations and restores the smooth flow of life force thereby healing the patient.

Whom Can Reiki Treat?

Reiki is a natural holistic system of healing that does not tie itself to any religious or cultural beliefs. It will flow equally through all clients once it has been attuned by a Reiki master.

Reiki can treat the young and old, male and female and anyone who is receptive of the healing energy. Reiki can even be beneficial for an unborn foetus in the mother's womb. It does not have to be practiced at any particular time or in any particular place. It does not require the client to alter eating habits or change any lifestyle habits.

In some unusual applications of Reiki it has even been used to treat plants and animals.

It is little wonder that Reiki is fast becoming one of the most popular methods of healing worldwide.
